Chapter 3

idete potaphn agaphn dedwken hmin o pathr ina tekna qeou klhqwmen dia touto o kosmoV ou ginwskei hmaV oti ouk egnw auton
3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

agaphtoi nun tekna qeou esmen kai oupw efanerwqh ti esomeqa oidamen de oti ean fanerwqh omoioi autw esomeqa oti oyomeqa auton kaqwV estin
3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

kai paV o ecwn thn elpida tauthn ep autw agnizei eauton kaqwV ekeinoV agnoV estin
3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

paV o poiwn thn amartian kai thn anomian poiei kai h amartia estin h anomia
3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

kai oidate oti ekeinoV efanerwqh ina taV amartiaV hmwn arh kai amartia en autw ouk estin
3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

paV o en autw menwn ouc amartanei paV o amartanwn ouc ewraken auton oude egnwken auton
3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

teknia mhdeiV planatw umaV o poiwn thn dikaiosunhn dikaioV estin kaqwV ekeinoV dikaioV estin
3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

o poiwn thn amartian ek tou diabolou estin oti ap archV o diaboloV amartanei eiV touto efanerwqh o uioV tou qeou ina lush ta erga tou diabolou
3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

paV o gegennhmenoV ek tou qeou amartian ou poiei oti sperma autou en autw menei kai ou dunatai amartanein oti ek tou qeou gegennhtai
3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

10

en toutw fanera estin ta tekna tou qeou kai ta tekna tou diabolou paV o mh poiwn dikaiosunhn ouk estin ek tou qeou kai o mh agapwn ton adelfon autou
3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

oti auth estin h aggelia hn hkousate ap archV ina agapwmen allhlouV
3:11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

12

ou kaqwV kain ek tou ponhrou hn kai esfaxen ton adelfon autou kai carin tinoV esfaxen auton oti ta erga autou ponhra hn ta de tou adelfou autou dikaia
3:12 Not as Cain, [who] was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

13

mh qaumazete adelfoi mou ei misei umaV o kosmoV
3:13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

14

hmeiV oidamen oti metabebhkamen ek tou qanatou eiV thn zwhn oti agapwmen touV adelfouV o mh agapwn ton adelfon menei en tw qanatw
3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not [his] brother abideth in death.

15

paV o miswn ton adelfon autou anqrwpoktonoV estin kai oidate oti paV anqrwpoktonoV ouk ecei zwhn aiwnion en autw menousan
3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

16

en toutw egnwkamen thn agaphn oti ekeinoV uper hmwn thn yuchn autou eqhken kai hmeiV ofeilomen uper twn adelfwn taV yucaV tiqenai
3:16 Hereby perceive we the love [of God], because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down [our] lives for the brethren.

17

oV d an ech ton bion tou kosmou kai qewrh ton adelfon autou creian econta kai kleish ta splagcna autou ap autou pwV h agaph tou qeou menei en autw
3:17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels [of compassion] from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

18

teknia mou mh agapwmen logw mhde glwssh all ergw kai alhqeia
3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

19

kai en toutw ginwskomen oti ek thV alhqeiaV esmen kai emprosqen autou peisomen taV kardiaV hmwn
3:19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

20

oti ean kataginwskh hmwn h kardia oti meizwn estin o qeoV thV kardiaV hmwn kai ginwskei panta
3:20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

21

agaphtoi ean h kardia hmwn mh kataginwskh hmwn parrhsian ecomen proV ton qeon
3:21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, [then] have we confidence toward God.

22

kai o ean aitwmen lambanomen par autou oti taV entolaV autou throumen kai ta aresta enwpion autou poioumen
3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

23

kai auth estin h entolh autou ina pisteuswmen tw onomati tou uiou autou ihsou cristou kai agapwmen allhlouV kaqwV edwken entolhn hmin
3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

24

kai o thrwn taV entolaV autou en autw menei kai autoV en autw kai en toutw ginwskomen oti menei en hmin ek tou pneumatoV ou hmin edwken
3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
