Chapter 19

kai eiselqwn dihrceto thn iericw

And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

kai idou anhr onomati kaloumenoV zakcaioV kai autoV hn arcitelwnhV kai outoV hn plousioV

And, behold there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.

kai ezhtei idein ton ihsoun tiV estin kai ouk hdunato apo tou oclou oti th hlikia mikroV hn

And he sought to see Jesus who he was and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.

kai prodramwn emprosqen anebh epi sukomwraian ina idh auton oti di ekeinhV hmellen diercesqai

And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.

kai wV hlqen epi ton topon anableyaV o ihsouV eiden auton kai eipen proV auton zakcaie speusaV katabhqi shmeron gar en tw oikw sou dei me meinai

And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste and come down for to day I must abide at thy house.

kai speusaV katebh kai upedexato auton cairwn

And he made haste and came down and received him joyfully

kai idonteV apanteV diegogguzon legonteV oti para amartwlw andri eishlqen katalusai

And when they saw it, they all murmured saying That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.

staqeiV de zakcaioV eipen proV ton kurion idou ta hmish twn uparcontwn mou kurie didwmi toiV ptwcoiV kai ei tinoV ti esukofanthsa apodidwmi tetraploun

And Zacchaeus stood and said unto the Lord; Behold Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation I restore him fourfold.

eipen de proV auton o ihsouV oti shmeron swthria tw oikw toutw egeneto kaqoti kai autoV uioV abraam estin

And Jesus said unto him , This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.

hlqen gar o uioV tou anqrwpou zhthsai kai swsai to apolwloV

For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost

akouontwn de autwn tauta prosqeiV eipen parabolhn dia to egguV auton einai ierousalhm kai dokein autouV oti paracrhma mellei h basileia tou qeou anafainesqai

And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear

eipen oun anqrwpoV tiV eugenhV eporeuqh eiV cwran makran labein eautw basileian kai upostreyai

He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return

kalesaV de deka doulouV eautou edwken autoiV deka mnaV kai eipen proV autouV pragmateusasqe ewV ercomai

And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come

oi de politai autou emisoun auton kai apesteilan presbeian opisw autou legonteV ou qelomen touton basileusai ef hmaV

But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying We will not have this man to reign over us.

kai egeneto en tw epanelqein auton labonta thn basileian kai eipen fwnhqhnai autw touV doulouV toutouV oiV edwken to argurion ina gnw tiV ti diepragmateusato

And it came to pass that when he was returned having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading

paregeneto de o prwtoV legwn kurie h mna sou proseirgasato deka mnaV

Then came the first, saying Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.

kai eipen autw eu agaqe doule oti en elacistw pistoV egenou isqi exousian ecwn epanw deka polewn

And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.

kai hlqen o deuteroV legwn kurie h mna sou epoihsen pente mnaV

And the second came saying Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.

eipen de kai toutw kai sou ginou epanw pente polewn

And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.

kai eteroV hlqen legwn kurie idou h mna sou hn eicon apokeimenhn en soudariw

And another came saying Lord, behold here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:

efoboumhn gar se oti anqrwpoV austhroV ei aireiV o ouk eqhkaV kai qerizeiV o ouk espeiraV

For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down and reapest that thou didst not sow

legei de autw ek tou stomatoV sou krinw se ponhre doule hdeiV oti egw anqrwpoV austhroV eimi airwn o ouk eqhka kai qerizwn o ouk espeira

And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down and reaping that I did not sow

kai diati ouk edwkaV to argurion mou epi thn trapezan kai egw elqwn sun tokw an epraxa auto

Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury ?

kai toiV parestwsin eipen arate ap autou thn mnan kai dote tw taV deka mnaV econti

And he said unto them that stood by Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.

kai eipon autw kurie ecei deka mnaV

they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)

legw gar umin oti panti tw econti doqhsetai apo de tou mh econtoV kai o ecei arqhsetai ap autou

For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.

plhn touV ecqrouV mou ekeinouV touV mh qelhsantaV me basileusai ep autouV agagete wde kai katasfaxate emprosqen mou

But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

kai eipwn tauta eporeueto emprosqen anabainwn eiV ierosoluma

And when he had thus spoken he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.

kai egeneto wV hggisen eiV bhqfagh kai bhqanian proV to oroV to kaloumenon elaiwn apesteilen duo twn maqhtwn autou

And it came to pass when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

eipwn upagete eiV thn katenanti kwmhn en h eisporeuomenoi eurhsete pwlon dedemenon ef on oudeiV pwpote anqrwpwn ekaqisen lusanteV auton agagete

Saying Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied whereon yet never man sat : loose him, and bring him hither.

kai ean tiV umaV erwta diati luete outwV ereite autw oti o kurioV autou creian ecei

And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.

apelqonteV de oi apestalmenoi euron kaqwV eipen autoiV

And they that were sent went their way and found even as he had said unto them.

luontwn de autwn ton pwlon eipon oi kurioi autou proV autouV ti luete ton pwlon

And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt ?

oi de eipon o kurioV autou creian ecei

And they said The Lord hath need of him.

kai hgagon auton proV ton ihsoun kai epirriyanteV eautwn ta imatia epi ton pwlon epebibasan ton ihsoun

And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon

poreuomenou de autou upestrwnnuon ta imatia autwn en th odw

And as he went they spread their clothes in the way.

eggizontoV de autou hdh proV th katabasei tou orouV twn elaiwn hrxanto apan to plhqoV twn maqhtwn caironteV ainein ton qeon fwnh megalh peri paswn wn eidon dunamewn

And when he was come nigh even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen

legonteV euloghmenoV o ercomenoV basileuV en onomati kuriou eirhnh en ouranw kai doxa en uyistoiV

Saying Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.

kai tineV twn farisaiwn apo tou oclou eipon proV auton didaskale epitimhson toiV maqhtaiV sou

And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.

kai apokriqeiV eipen autoiV legw umin oti ean outoi siwphswsin oi liqoi kekraxontai

And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace the stones would immediately cry out

kai wV hggisen idwn thn polin eklausen ep auth

And when he was come near he beheld the city, and wept over it,

legwn oti ei egnwV kai su kai ge en th hmera sou tauth ta proV eirhnhn sou nun de ekrubh apo ofqalmwn sou

Saying If thou hadst known even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

oti hxousin hmerai epi se kai peribalousin oi ecqroi sou caraka soi kai perikuklwsousin se kai sunexousin se pantoqen

For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round and keep thee in on every side,

kai edafiousin se kai ta tekna sou en soi kai ouk afhsousin en soi liqon epi liqw anq wn ouk egnwV ton kairon thV episkophV sou

And shall lay thee even with the ground and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

kai eiselqwn eiV to ieron hrxato ekballein touV pwlountaV en autw kai agorazontaV

And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein , and them that bought

legwn autoiV gegraptai o oikoV mou oikoV proseuchV estin umeiV de auton epoihsate sphlaion lhstwn

Saying unto them, It is written My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.

kai hn didaskwn to kaq hmeran en tw ierw oi de arciereiV kai oi grammateiV ezhtoun auton apolesai kai oi prwtoi tou laou

And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,

kai ouc euriskon to ti poihswsin o laoV gar apaV exekremato autou akouwn

And could not find what they might do for all the people were very attentive to hear him.
