Chapter 4

lalountwn de autwn proV ton laon epesthsan autoiV oi iereiV kai o strathgoV tou ierou kai oi saddoukaioi

And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,

diaponoumenoi dia to didaskein autouV ton laon kai kataggellein en tw ihsou thn anastasin thn ek nekrwn

Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

kai epebalon autoiV taV ceiraV kai eqento eiV thrhsin eiV thn aurion hn gar espera hdh

And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide.

polloi de twn akousantwn ton logon episteusan kai egenhqh o ariqmoV twn andrwn wsei ciliadeV pente

Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed and the number of the men was about five thousand.

egeneto de epi thn aurion sunacqhnai autwn touV arcontaV kai presbuterouV kai grammateiV eiV ierousalhm

And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes,

kai annan ton arcierea kai kaiafan kai iwannhn kai alexandron kai osoi hsan ek genouV arcieratikou

And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.

And when they had set them in the midst, they asked By what power, or by what name, have ye done this ?

tote petroV plhsqeiV pneumatoV agiou eipen proV autouV arconteV tou laou kai presbuteroi tou israhl

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,

ei hmeiV shmeron anakrinomeqa epi euergesia anqrwpou asqenouV en tini outoV seswstai

If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole

gnwston estw pasin umin kai panti tw law israhl oti en tw onomati ihsou cristou tou nazwraiou on umeiV estaurwsate on o qeoV hgeiren ek nekrwn en toutw outoV paresthken enwpion umwn ugihV

Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

outoV estin o liqoV o exouqenhqeiV uf umwn twn oikodomountwn o genomenoV eiV kefalhn gwniaV

This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders which is become the head of the corner.

kai ouk estin en allw oudeni h swthria oute gar onoma estin eteron upo ton ouranon to dedomenon en anqrwpoiV en w dei swqhnai hmaV

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved

qewrounteV de thn tou petrou parrhsian kai iwannou kai katalabomenoi oti anqrwpoi agrammatoi eisin kai idiwtai eqaumazon epeginwskon te autouV oti sun tw ihsou hsan

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

ton de anqrwpon bleponteV sun autoiV estwta ton teqerapeumenon ouden eicon anteipein

And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it

keleusanteV de autouV exw tou sunedriou apelqein sunebalon proV allhlouV

But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,

legonteV ti poihsomen toiV anqrwpoiV toutoiV oti men gar gnwston shmeion gegonen di autwn pasin toiV katoikousin ierousalhm faneron kai ou dunameqa arnhsasqai

Saying What shall we do to these men ? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.

But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.

kai kalesanteV autouV parhggeilan autoiV to kaqolou mh fqeggesqai mhde didaskein epi tw onomati tou ihsou

And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

o de petroV kai iwannhV apokriqenteV proV autouV eipon ei dikaion estin enwpion tou qeou umwn akouein mallon h tou qeou krinate

But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye

ou dunameqa gar hmeiV a eidomen kai hkousamen mh lalein

For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard

So when they had further threatened them they let them go finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done

etwn gar hn pleionwn tessarakonta o anqrwpoV ef on egegonei to shmeion touto thV iasewV

For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed

apoluqenteV de hlqon proV touV idiouV kai aphggeilan osa proV autouV oi arciereiV kai oi presbuteroi eipon

And being let go they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.

oi de akousanteV omoqumadon hran fwnhn proV ton qeon kai eipon despota su o qeoV o poihsaV ton ouranon kai thn ghn kai thn qalassan kai panta ta en autoiV

And when they heard that they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:

o dia stomatoV dabid tou paidoV sou eipwn inati efruaxan eqnh kai laoi emelethsan kena

Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said Why did the heathen rage and the people imagine vain things ?

paresthsan oi basileiV thV ghV kai oi arconteV sunhcqhsan epi to auto kata tou kuriou kai kata tou cristou autou

The kings of the earth stood up and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.

sunhcqhsan gar ep alhqeiaV epi ton agion paida sou ihsoun on ecrisaV hrwdhV te kai pontioV pilatoV sun eqnesin kai laoiV israhl

For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together

poihsai osa h ceir sou kai h boulh sou prowrisen genesqai

For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done

kai ta nun kurie epide epi taV apeilaV autwn kai doV toiV douloiV sou meta parrhsiaV pashV lalein ton logon sou

And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

en tw thn ceira sou ekteinein se eiV iasin kai shmeia kai terata ginesqai dia tou onomatoV tou agiou paidoV sou ihsou

By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.

kai dehqentwn autwn esaleuqh o topoV en w hsan sunhgmenoi kai eplhsqhsan apanteV pneumatoV agiou kai elaloun ton logon tou qeou meta parrhsiaV

And when they had prayed the place was shaken where they were assembled together and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

tou de plhqouV twn pisteusantwn hn h kardia kai h yuch mia kai oude eiV ti twn uparcontwn autw elegen idion einai all hn autoiV apanta koina

And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

kai megalh dunamei apedidoun to marturion oi apostoloi thV anastasewV tou kuriou ihsou cariV te megalh hn epi pantaV autouV

And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

oude gar endehV tiV uphrcen en autoiV osoi gar kthtoreV cwriwn h oikiwn uphrcon pwlounteV eferon taV timaV twn pipraskomenwn

Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them and brought the prices of the things that were sold

kai etiqoun para touV podaV twn apostolwn diedidoto de ekastw kaqoti an tiV creian eicen

And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need .

And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas , is being interpreted The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,

Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
