Chapter 4

wV oun egnw o kurioV oti hkousan oi farisaioi oti ihsouV pleionaV maqhtaV poiei kai baptizei h iwannhV

When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

kaitoige ihsouV autoV ouk ebaptizen all oi maqhtai autou

Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

afhken thn ioudaian kai aphlqen palin eiV thn galilaian

He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

edei de auton diercesqai dia thV samareiaV

And he must needs go through Samaria.

ercetai oun eiV polin thV samareiaV legomenhn sucar plhsion tou cwriou o edwken iakwb iwshf tw uiw autou

Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

hn de ekei phgh tou iakwb o oun ihsouV kekopiakwV ek thV odoiporiaV ekaqezeto outwV epi th phgh wra hn wsei ekth

Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

ercetai gunh ek thV samareiaV antlhsai udwr legei auth o ihsouV doV moi piein

There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink

oi gar maqhtai autou apelhluqeisan eiV thn polin ina trofaV agoraswsin

his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

legei oun autw h gunh h samareitiV pwV su ioudaioV wn par emou piein aiteiV oushV gunaikoV samareitidoV ou gar sugcrwntai ioudaioi samareitaiV

Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria ? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

apekriqh ihsouV kai eipen auth ei hdeiV thn dwrean tou qeou kai tiV estin o legwn soi doV moi piein su an hthsaV auton kai edwken an soi udwr zwn

Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

legei autw h gunh kurie oute antlhma eceiV kai to frear estin baqu poqen oun eceiV to udwr to zwn

The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water ?

mh su meizwn ei tou patroV hmwn iakwb oV edwken hmin to frear kai autoV ex autou epien kai oi uioi autou kai ta qremmata autou

Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle ?

apekriqh o ihsouV kai eipen auth paV o pinwn ek tou udatoV toutou diyhsei palin

Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

oV d an pih ek tou udatoV ou egw dwsw autw ou mh diyhsh eiV ton aiwna alla to udwr o dwsw autw genhsetai en autw phgh udatoV allomenou eiV zwhn aiwnion

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

legei proV auton h gunh kurie doV moi touto to udwr ina mh diyw mhde ercwmai enqade antlein

The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw

legei auth o ihsouV upage fwnhson ton andra sou kai elqe enqade

Jesus saith unto her, Go call thy husband, and come hither.

apekriqh h gunh kai eipen ouk ecw andra legei auth o ihsouV kalwV eipaV oti andra ouk ecw

The woman answered and said I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said I have no husband:

pente gar andraV esceV kai nun on eceiV ouk estin sou anhr touto alhqeV eirhkaV

For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

legei autw h gunh kurie qewrw oti profhthV ei su

The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

oi patereV hmwn en toutw tw orei prosekunhsan kai umeiV legete oti en ierosolumoiV estin o topoV opou dei proskunein

Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship

legei auth o ihsouV gunai pisteuson moi oti ercetai wra ote oute en tw orei toutw oute en ierosolumoiV proskunhsete tw patri

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

umeiV proskuneite o ouk oidate hmeiV proskunoumen o oidamen oti h swthria ek twn ioudaiwn estin

Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship for salvation is of the Jews.

all ercetai wra kai nun estin ote oi alhqinoi proskunhtai proskunhsousin tw patri en pneumati kai alhqeia kai gar o pathr toioutouV zhtei touV proskunountaV auton

But the hour cometh and now is when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

pneuma o qeoV kai touV proskunountaV auton en pneumati kai alhqeia dei proskunein

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

legei autw h gunh oida oti messiaV ercetai o legomenoV cristoV otan elqh ekeinoV anaggelei hmin panta

The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh which is called Christ: when he is come he will tell us all things.

legei auth o ihsouV egw eimi o lalwn soi

Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

kai epi toutw hlqon oi maqhtai autou kai eqaumasan oti meta gunaikoV elalei oudeiV mentoi eipen ti zhteiV h ti laleiV met authV

And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said What seekest thou or, Why talkest thou with her ?

afhken oun thn udrian authV h gunh kai aphlqen eiV thn polin kai legei toiV anqrwpoiV

The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

deute idete anqrwpon oV eipen moi panta osa epoihsa mhti outoV estin o cristoV

Come see a man, which told me all things that ever I did is not this the Christ ?

exhlqon oun ek thV polewV kai hrconto proV auton

Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

en de tw metaxu hrwtwn auton oi maqhtai legonteV rabbi fage

In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying Master, eat

o de eipen autoiV egw brwsin ecw fagein hn umeiV ouk oidate

But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of

elegon oun oi maqhtai proV allhlouV mh tiV hnegken autw fagein

Therefore said the disciples one to another , Hath any man brought him ought to eat

legei autoiV o ihsouV emon brwma estin ina poiw to qelhma tou pemyantoV me kai teleiwsw autou to ergon

Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

ouc umeiV legete oti eti tetramhnon estin kai o qerismoV ercetai idou legw umin eparate touV ofqalmouV umwn kai qeasasqe taV cwraV oti leukai eisin proV qerismon hdh

Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest ? behold I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

kai o qerizwn misqon lambanei kai sunagei karpon eiV zwhn aiwnion ina kai o speirwn omou cairh kai o qerizwn

And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

en gar toutw o logoV estin o alhqinoV oti alloV estin o speirwn kai alloV o qerizwn

And herein is that saying true , One soweth and another reapeth

egw apesteila umaV qerizein o ouc umeiV kekopiakate alloi kekopiakasin kai umeiV eiV ton kopon autwn eiselhluqate

I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour other men laboured and ye are entered into their labours.

ek de thV polewV ekeinhV polloi episteusan eiV auton twn samareitwn dia ton logon thV gunaikoV marturoushV oti eipen moi panta osa epoihsa

And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified He told me all that ever I did

wV oun hlqon proV auton oi samareitai hrwtwn auton meinai par autoiV kai emeinen ekei duo hmeraV

So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.

kai pollw pleiouV episteusan dia ton logon autou

And many more believed because of his own word;

th te gunaiki elegon oti ouketi dia thn shn lalian pisteuomen autoi gar akhkoamen kai oidamen oti outoV estin alhqwV o swthr tou kosmou o cristoV

And said unto the woman , Now we believe not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

meta de taV duo hmeraV exhlqen ekeiqen kai aphlqen eiV thn galilaian

Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.

autoV gar o ihsouV emarturhsen oti profhthV en th idia patridi timhn ouk ecei

For Jesus himself testified that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.

ote oun hlqen eiV thn galilaian edexanto auton oi galilaioi panta ewrakoteV a epoihsen en ierosolumoiV en th eorth kai autoi gar hlqon eiV thn eorthn

Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.

hlqen oun o ihsouV palin eiV thn kana thV galilaiaV opou epoihsen to udwr oinon kai hn tiV basilikoV ou o uioV hsqenei en kapernaoum

So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.

outoV akousaV oti ihsouV hkei ek thV ioudaiaV eiV thn galilaian aphlqen proV auton kai hrwta auton ina katabh kai iashtai autou ton uion hmellen gar apoqnhskein

When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down and heal his son: for he was at the point of death

eipen oun o ihsouV proV auton ean mh shmeia kai terata idhte ou mh pisteushte

Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe

legei proV auton o basilikoV kurie katabhqi prin apoqanein to paidion mou

The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die

legei autw o ihsouV poreuou o uioV sou zh kai episteusen o anqrwpoV tw logw w eipen autw ihsouV kai eporeueto

Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way thy son liveth And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way

hdh de autou katabainontoV oi douloi autou aphnthsan autw kai aphggeilan legonteV oti o paiV sou zh

And as he was now going down his servants met him, and told him, saying Thy son liveth

epuqeto oun par autwn thn wran en h komyoteron escen kai eipon autw oti cqeV wran ebdomhn afhken auton o puretoV

Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him , Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.

egnw oun o pathr oti en ekeinh th wra en h eipen autw o ihsouV oti o uioV sou zh kai episteusen autoV kai h oikia autou olh

So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him , Thy son liveth and himself believed and his whole house.

touto palin deuteron shmeion epoihsen o ihsouV elqwn ek thV ioudaiaV eiV thn galilaian

This is again the second miracle that Jesus did when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.
