Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

ep arcierewn anna kai kaiafa egeneto rhma qeou epi iwannhn ton tou zacariou uion en th erhmw

Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

kai hlqen eiV pasan thn pericwron tou iordanou khrusswn baptisma metanoiaV eiV afesin amartiwn

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

wV gegraptai en biblw logwn hsaiou tou profhtou legontoV fwnh bowntoV en th erhmw etoimasate thn odon kuriou euqeiaV poieite taV tribouV autou

As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

pasa faragx plhrwqhsetai kai pan oroV kai bounoV tapeinwqhsetai kai estai ta skolia eiV euqeian kai ai traceiai eiV odouV leiaV

Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be brought low and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

kai oyetai pasa sarx to swthrion tou qeou

And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

elegen oun toiV ekporeuomenoiV ocloiV baptisqhnai up autou gennhmata ecidnwn tiV upedeixen umin fugein apo thV melloushV orghV

Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come

poihsate oun karpouV axiouV thV metanoiaV kai mh arxhsqe legein en eautoiV patera ecomen ton abraam legw gar umin oti dunatai o qeoV ek twn liqwn toutwn egeirai tekna tw abraam

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.

kai ephrwtwn auton oi ocloi legonteV ti oun poihsomen

And the people asked him, saying What shall we do then ?

apokriqeiV de legei autoiV o ecwn duo citwnaV metadotw tw mh econti kai o ecwn brwmata omoiwV poieitw

He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

hlqon de kai telwnai baptisqhnai kai eipon proV auton didaskale ti poihsomen

Then came also publicans to be baptized and said unto him, Master, what shall we do

o de eipen proV autouV mhden pleon para to diatetagmenon umin prassete

And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

ephrwtwn de auton kai strateuomenoi legonteV kai hmeiV ti poihsomen kai eipen proV autouV mhdena diaseishte mhde sukofanthshte kai arkeisqe toiV oywnioiV umwn

And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying And what shall we do And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely and be content with your wages.

prosdokwntoV de tou laou kai dialogizomenwn pantwn en taiV kardiaiV autwn peri tou iwannou mhpote autoV eih o cristoV

And as the people were in expectation and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

apekrinato o iwannhV apasin legwn egw men udati baptizw umaV ercetai de o iscuroteroV mou ou ouk eimi ikanoV lusai ton imanta twn upodhmatwn autou autoV umaV baptisei en pneumati agiw kai puri

John answered saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

ou to ptuon en th ceiri autou kai diakaqariei thn alwna autou kai sunaxei ton siton eiV thn apoqhkhn autou to de acuron katakausei puri asbestw

Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

polla men oun kai etera parakalwn euhggelizeto ton laon

And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

o de hrwdhV o tetrarchV elegcomenoV up autou peri hrwdiadoV thV gunaikoV filippou tou adelfou autou kai peri pantwn wn epoihsen ponhrwn o hrwdhV

But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done

proseqhken kai touto epi pasin kai katekleisen ton iwannhn en th fulakh

Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

egeneto de en tw baptisqhnai apanta ton laon kai ihsou baptisqentoV kai proseucomenou anewcqhnai ton ouranon

Now when all the people were baptized it came to pass that Jesus also being baptized and praying the heaven was opened

kai katabhnai to pneuma to agion swmatikw eidei wsei peristeran ep auton kai fwnhn ex ouranou genesqai legousan su ei o uioV mou o agaphtoV en soi hudokhsa

And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased

And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being was supposed the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
