Chapter 8

en ekeinaiV taiV hmeraiV pampollou oclou ontoV kai mh econtwn ti fagwsin proskalesamenoV o ihsouV touV maqhtaV autou legei autoiV

In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,

splagcnizomai epi ton oclon oti hdh hmeraV treiV prosmenousin moi kai ouk ecousin ti fagwsin

I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat

kai ean apolusw autouV nhsteiV eiV oikon autwn ekluqhsontai en th odw tineV gar autwn makroqen hkasin

And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.

kai apekriqhsan autw oi maqhtai autou poqen toutouV dunhsetai tiV wde cortasai artwn ep erhmiaV

And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness ?

kai ephrwta autouV posouV ecete artouV oi de eipon epta

And he asked them, How many loaves have ye And they said Seven.

kai parhggeilen tw oclw anapesein epi thV ghV kai labwn touV epta artouV eucaristhsaV eklasen kai edidou toiV maqhtaiV autou ina paraqwsin kai pareqhkan tw oclw

And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks and brake and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.

kai eicon icqudia oliga kai euloghsaV eipen paraqeinai kai auta

And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed and commanded to set them also before them.

efagon de kai ecortasqhsan kai hran perisseumata klasmatwn epta spuridaV

So they did eat and were filled and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.

hsan de oi fagonteV wV tetrakiscilioi kai apelusen autouV

And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away

kai euqewV embaV eiV to ploion meta twn maqhtwn autou hlqen eiV ta merh dalmanouqa

And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

kai exhlqon oi farisaioi kai hrxanto suzhtein autw zhtounteV par autou shmeion apo tou ouranou peirazonteV auton

And the Pharisees came forth and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.

kai anastenaxaV tw pneumati autou legei ti h genea auth shmeion epizhtei amhn legw umin ei doqhsetai th genea tauth shmeion

And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith Why doth this generation seek after a sign ? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

kai afeiV autouV embaV palin eiV to ploion aphlqen eiV to peran

And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.

kai epelaqonto labein artouV kai ei mh ena arton ouk eicon meq eautwn en tw ploiw

Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.

kai diestelleto autoiV legwn orate blepete apo thV zumhV twn farisaiwn kai thV zumhV hrwdou

And he charged them, saying Take heed beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

kai dielogizonto proV allhlouV legonteV oti artouV ouk ecomen

And they reasoned among themselves, saying It is because we have no bread.

kai gnouV o ihsouV legei autoiV ti dialogizesqe oti artouV ouk ecete oupw noeite oude suniete eti pepwrwmenhn ecete thn kardian umwn

And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye because ye have no bread ? perceive ye not yet, neither understand have ye your heart yet hardened

ofqalmouV econteV ou blepete kai wta econteV ouk akouete kai ou mnhmoneuete

Having eyes, see ye not ? and having ears, hear ye not ? and do ye not remember

ote touV pente artouV eklasa eiV touV pentakisciliouV posouV kofinouV plhreiV klasmatwn hrate legousin autw dwdeka

When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up They say unto him, Twelve.

ote de touV epta eiV touV tetrakisciliouV poswn spuridwn plhrwmata klasmatwn hrate oi de eipon epta

And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up And they said Seven.

kai elegen autoiV pwV ou suniete

And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand

kai ercetai eiV bhqsaidan kai ferousin autw tuflon kai parakalousin auton ina autou ayhtai

And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him.

kai epilabomenoV thV ceiroV tou tuflou exhgagen auton exw thV kwmhV kai ptusaV eiV ta ommata autou epiqeiV taV ceiraV autw ephrwta auton ei ti blepei

And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.

kai anableyaV elegen blepw touV anqrwpouV oti wV dendra orw peripatountaV

And he looked up and said I see men as trees, walking

eita palin epeqhken taV ceiraV epi touV ofqalmouV autou kai epoihsen auton anableyai kai apokatestaqh kai enebleyen thlaugwV apantaV

After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up and he was restored and saw every man clearly.

kai apesteilen auton eiV ton oikon autou legwn mhde eiV thn kwmhn eiselqhV mhde eiphV tini en th kwmh

And he sent him away to his house, saying Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.

kai exhlqen o ihsouV kai oi maqhtai autou eiV taV kwmaV kaisareiaV thV filippou kai en th odw ephrwta touV maqhtaV autou legwn autoiV tina me legousin oi anqrwpoi einai

And Jesus went out and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am

oi de apekriqhsan iwannhn ton baptisthn kai alloi hlian alloi de ena twn profhtwn

And they answered John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.

kai autoV legei autoiV umeiV de tina me legete einai apokriqeiV de o petroV legei autw su ei o cristoV

And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.

kai epetimhsen autoiV ina mhdeni legwsin peri autou

And he charged them that they should tell no man of him.

kai hrxato didaskein autouV oti dei ton uion tou anqrwpou polla paqein kai apodokimasqhnai apo twn presbuterwn kai arcierewn kai grammatewn kai apoktanqhnai kai meta treiV hmeraV anasthnai

And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed and after three days rise again

kai parrhsia ton logon elalei kai proslabomenoV auton o petroV hrxato epitiman autw

And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.

o de epistrafeiV kai idwn touV maqhtaV autou epetimhsen tw petrw legwn upage opisw mou satana oti ou froneiV ta tou qeou alla ta twn anqrwpwn

But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

kai proskalesamenoV ton oclon sun toiV maqhtaiV autou eipen autoiV ostiV qelei opisw mou elqein aparnhsasqw eauton kai aratw ton stauron autou kai akolouqeitw moi

And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

oV gar an qelh thn yuchn autou swsai apolesei authn oV d an apolesh thn yuchn autou eneken emou kai tou euaggeliou outoV swsei authn

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.

ti gar wfelhsei anqrwpon ean kerdhsh ton kosmon olon kai zhmiwqh thn yuchn autou

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul ?

h ti dwsei anqrwpoV antallagma thV yuchV autou

Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul ?

oV gar an epaiscunqh me kai touV emouV logouV en th genea tauth th moicalidi kai amartwlw kai o uioV tou anqrwpou epaiscunqhsetai auton otan elqh en th doxh tou patroV autou meta twn aggelwn twn agiwn

Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
