Chapter 1

arch tou euaggeliou ihsou cristou uiou tou qeou

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;

wV gegraptai en toiV profhtaiV idou egw apostellw ton aggelon mou pro proswpou sou oV kataskeuasei thn odon sou emprosqen sou

As it is written in the prophets, Behold I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

fwnh bowntoV en th erhmw etoimasate thn odon kuriou euqeiaV poieite taV tribouV autou

The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

egeneto iwannhV baptizwn en th erhmw kai khrusswn baptisma metanoiaV eiV afesin amartiwn

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

kai exeporeueto proV auton pasa h ioudaia cwra kai oi ierosolumitai kai ebaptizonto panteV en tw iordanh potamw up autou exomologoumenoi taV amartiaV autwn

And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

hn de iwannhV endedumenoV tricaV kamhlou kai zwnhn dermatinhn peri thn osfun autou kai esqiwn akridaV kai meli agrion

And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

kai ekhrussen legwn ercetai o iscuroteroV mou opisw mou ou ouk eimi ikanoV kuyaV lusai ton imanta twn upodhmatwn autou

And preached saying There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose

egw men ebaptisa umaV en udati autoV de baptisei umaV en pneumati agiw

I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

kai egeneto en ekeinaiV taiV hmeraiV hlqen ihsouV apo nazaret thV galilaiaV kai ebaptisqh upo iwannou eiV ton iordanhn

And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.

kai euqewV anabainwn apo tou udatoV eiden scizomenouV touV ouranouV kai to pneuma wsei peristeran katabainon ep auton

And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

kai fwnh egeneto ek twn ouranwn su ei o uioV mou o agaphtoV en w eudokhsa

And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased

kai euquV to pneuma auton ekballei eiV thn erhmon

And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.

kai hn ekei en th erhmw hmeraV tessarakonta peirazomenoV upo tou satana kai hn meta twn qhriwn kai oi aggeloi dihkonoun autw

And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.

meta de to paradoqhnai ton iwannhn hlqen o ihsouV eiV thn galilaian khrusswn to euaggelion thV basileiaV tou qeou

Now after that John was put in prison Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

kai legwn oti peplhrwtai o kairoV kai hggiken h basileia tou qeou metanoeite kai pisteuete en tw euaggeliw

And saying The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand repent ye and believe the gospel.

peripatwn de para thn qalassan thV galilaiaV eiden simwna kai andrean ton adelfon autou ballontaV amfiblhstron en th qalassh hsan gar alieiV

Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

kai eipen autoiV o ihsouV deute opisw mou kai poihsw umaV genesqai alieiV anqrwpwn

And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

kai euqewV afenteV ta diktua autwn hkolouqhsan autw

And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

kai probaV ekeiqen oligon eiden iakwbon ton tou zebedaiou kai iwannhn ton adelfon autou kai autouV en tw ploiw katartizontaV ta diktua

And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.

kai euqewV ekalesen autouV kai afenteV ton patera autwn zebedaion en tw ploiw meta twn misqwtwn aphlqon opisw autou

And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

kai eisporeuontai eiV kapernaoum kai euqewV toiV sabbasin eiselqwn eiV thn sunagwghn edidasken

And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught

kai exeplhssonto epi th didach autou hn gar didaskwn autouV wV exousian ecwn kai ouc wV oi grammateiV

And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

kai hn en th sunagwgh autwn anqrwpoV en pneumati akaqartw kai anekraxen

And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out

legwn ea ti hmin kai soi ihsou nazarhne hlqeV apolesai hmaV oida se tiV ei o agioV tou qeou

Saying Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth ? art thou come to destroy us ? I know thee who thou art the Holy One of God.

kai epetimhsen autw o ihsouV legwn fimwqhti kai exelqe ex autou

And Jesus rebuked him, saying Hold thy peace and come out of him.

kai sparaxan auton to pneuma to akaqarton kai kraxan fwnh megalh exhlqen ex autou

And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.

kai eqambhqhsan panteV wste suzhtein proV autouV legontaV ti estin touto tiV h didach h kainh auth oti kat exousian kai toiV pneumasin toiV akaqartoiV epitassei kai upakouousin autw

And they were all amazed insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying What thing is this ? what new doctrine is this ? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

exhlqen de h akoh autou euquV eiV olhn thn pericwron thV galilaiaV

And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

kai euqewV ek thV sunagwghV exelqonteV hlqon eiV thn oikian simwnoV kai andreou meta iakwbou kai iwannou

And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

h de penqera simwnoV katekeito puressousa kai euqewV legousin autw peri authV

But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever and anon they tell him of her.

kai proselqwn hgeiren authn krathsaV thV ceiroV authV kai afhken authn o puretoV euqewV kai dihkonei autoiV

And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.

oyiaV de genomenhV ote edu o hlioV eferon proV auton pantaV touV kakwV econtaV kai touV daimonizomenouV

And at even, when the sun did set they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils

kai h poliV olh episunhgmenh hn proV thn quran

And all the city was gathered together at the door.

kai eqerapeusen pollouV kakwV econtaV poikilaiV nosoiV kai daimonia polla exebalen kai ouk hfien lalein ta daimonia oti hdeisan auton

And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak because they knew him.

kai prwi ennucon lian anastaV exhlqen kai aphlqen eiV erhmon topon kakei proshuceto

And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed

kai katediwxan auton o simwn kai oi met autou

And Simon and they that were with him followed after him.

kai euronteV auton legousin autw oti panteV zhtousin se

And when they had found him, they said unto him , All men seek for thee.

kai legei autoiV agwmen eiV taV ecomenaV kwmopoleiV ina kakei khruxw eiV touto gar exelhluqa

And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth

kai hn khrusswn en taiV sunagwgaiV autwn eiV olhn thn galilaian kai ta daimonia ekballwn

And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.

kai ercetai proV auton leproV parakalwn auton kai gonupetwn auton kai legwn autw oti ean qelhV dunasai me kaqarisai

And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him , If thou wilt thou canst make me clean

o de ihsouV splagcnisqeiV ekteinaV thn ceira hyato autou kai legei autw qelw kaqarisqhti

And Jesus, moved with compassion put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will be thou clean

kai eipontoV autou euqewV aphlqen ap autou h lepra kai ekaqarisqh

And as soon as he had spoken immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed

kai embrimhsamenoV autw euqewV exebalen auton

And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away

kai legei autw ora mhdeni mhden eiphV all upage seauton deixon tw ierei kai prosenegke peri tou kaqarismou sou a prosetaxen mwshV eiV marturion autoiV

And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded for a testimony unto them.

o de exelqwn hrxato khrussein polla kai diafhmizein ton logon wste mhketi auton dunasqai fanerwV eiV polin eiselqein all exw en erhmoiV topoiV hn kai hrconto proV auton pantacoqen

But he went out and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.
