Chapter 23

tote o ihsouV elalhsen toiV ocloiV kai toiV maqhtaiV autou

Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,

legwn epi thV mwsewV kaqedraV ekaqisan oi grammateiV kai oi farisaioi

Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:

panta oun osa an eipwsin umin threin threite kai poieite kata de ta erga autwn mh poieite legousin gar kai ou poiousin

All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe that observe and do but do not ye after their works: for they say and do not.

desmeuousin gar fortia barea kai dusbastakta kai epitiqeasin epi touV wmouV twn anqrwpwn tw de daktulw autwn ou qelousin kinhsai auta

For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

panta de ta erga autwn poiousin proV to qeaqhnai toiV anqrwpoiV platunousin de ta fulakthria autwn kai megalunousin ta kraspeda twn imatiwn autwn

But all their works they do for to be seen of men : they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

filousin te thn prwtoklisian en toiV deipnoiV kai taV prwtokaqedriaV en taiV sunagwgaiV

And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

kai touV aspasmouV en taiV agoraiV kai kaleisqai upo twn anqrwpwn rabbi rabbi

And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

umeiV de mh klhqhte rabbi eiV gar estin umwn o kaqhghthV o cristoV panteV de umeiV adelfoi este

But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

kai patera mh kaleshte umwn epi thV ghV eiV gar estin o pathr umwn o en toiV ouranoiV

And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

mhde klhqhte kaqhghtai eiV gar umwn estin o kaqhghthV o cristoV

Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

o de meizwn umwn estai umwn diakonoV

But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

ostiV de uywsei eauton tapeinwqhsetai kai ostiV tapeinwsei eauton uywqhsetai

And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted

ouai umin grammateiV kai farisaioi upokritai oti kleiete thn basileian twn ouranwn emprosqen twn anqrwpwn umeiV gar ouk eisercesqe oude touV eisercomenouV afiete eiselqein

But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in

ouai de umin grammateiV kai farisaioi upokritai oti katesqiete taV oikiaV twn chrwn kai profasei makra proseucomenoi dia touto lhyesqe perissoteron krima

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

ouai umin grammateiV kai farisaioi upokritai oti periagete thn qalassan kai thn xhran poihsai ena proshluton kai otan genhtai poieite auton uion geennhV diploteron umwn

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

ouai umin odhgoi tufloi oi legonteV oV an omosh en tw naw ouden estin oV d an omosh en tw crusw tou naou ofeilei

Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor

mwroi kai tufloi tiV gar meizwn estin o crusoV h o naoV o agiazwn ton cruson

Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold ?

kai oV ean omosh en tw qusiasthriw ouden estin oV d an omosh en tw dwrw tw epanw autou ofeilei

And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty

mwroi kai tufloi ti gar meizon to dwron h to qusiasthrion to agiazon to dwron

Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift ?

o oun omosaV en tw qusiasthriw omnuei en autw kai en pasin toiV epanw autou

Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon .

kai o omosaV en tw naw omnuei en autw kai en tw katoikounti auton

And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.

kai o omosaV en tw ouranw omnuei en tw qronw tou qeou kai en tw kaqhmenw epanw autou

And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon .

ouai umin grammateiV kai farisaioi upokritai oti apodekatoute to hduosmon kai to anhqon kai to kuminon kai afhkate ta barutera tou nomou thn krisin kai ton eleon kai thn pistin tauta edei poihsai kakeina mh afienai

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment , mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done and not to leave the other undone

odhgoi tufloi oi diulizonteV ton kwnwpa thn de kamhlon katapinonteV

Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

ouai umin grammateiV kai farisaioi upokritai oti kaqarizete to exwqen tou pothriou kai thV paroyidoV eswqen de gemousin ex arpaghV kai akrasiaV

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

farisaie tufle kaqarison prwton to entoV tou pothriou kai thV paroyidoV ina genhtai kai to ektoV autwn kaqaron

Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

ouai umin grammateiV kai farisaioi upokritai oti paromoiazete tafoiV kekoniamenoiV oitineV exwqen men fainontai wraioi eswqen de gemousin ostewn nekrwn kai pashV akaqarsiaV

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

outwV kai umeiV exwqen men fainesqe toiV anqrwpoiV dikaioi eswqen de mestoi este upokrisewV kai anomiaV

Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

ouai umin grammateiV kai farisaioi upokritai oti oikodomeite touV tafouV twn profhtwn kai kosmeite ta mnhmeia twn dikaiwn

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

kai legete ei hmen en taiV hmeraiV twn paterwn hmwn ouk an hmen koinwnoi autwn en tw aimati twn profhtwn

And say If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

wste martureite eautoiV oti uioi este twn foneusantwn touV profhtaV

Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

kai umeiV plhrwsate to metron twn paterwn umwn

Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

ofeiV gennhmata ecidnwn pwV fughte apo thV krisewV thV geennhV

Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell ?

dia touto idou egw apostellw proV umaV profhtaV kai sofouV kai grammateiV kai ex autwn apokteneite kai staurwsete kai ex autwn mastigwsete en taiV sunagwgaiV umwn kai diwxete apo polewV eiV polin

Wherefore , behold I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:

opwV elqh ef umaV pan aima dikaion ekcunomenon epi thV ghV apo tou aimatoV abel tou dikaiou ewV tou aimatoV zacariou uiou baraciou on efoneusate metaxu tou naou kai tou qusiasthriou

That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

amhn legw umin hxei tauta panta epi thn genean tauthn

Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

ierousalhm ierousalhm h apokteinousa touV profhtaV kai liqobolousa touV apestalmenouV proV authn posakiV hqelhsa episunagagein ta tekna sou on tropon episunagei orniV ta nossia eauthV upo taV pterugaV kai ouk hqelhsate

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

idou afietai umin o oikoV umwn erhmoV

Behold your house is left unto you desolate.

legw gar umin ou mh me idhte ap arti ewV an eiphte euloghmenoV o ercomenoV en onomati kuriou

For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth , till ye shall say Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
