Chapter 6

en de taiV hmeraiV tautaiV plhqunontwn twn maqhtwn egeneto goggusmoV twn ellhnistwn proV touV ebraiouV oti pareqewrounto en th diakonia th kaqhmerinh ai chrai autwn

And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

proskalesamenoi de oi dwdeka to plhqoV twn maqhtwn eipon ouk areston estin hmaV kataleiyantaV ton logon tou qeou diakonein trapezaiV

Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

episkeyasqe oun adelfoi andraV ex umwn marturoumenouV epta plhreiV pneumatoV agiou kai sofiaV ouV katasthsomen epi thV creiaV tauthV

Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

hmeiV de th proseuch kai th diakonia tou logou proskarterhsomen

But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

kai hresen o logoV enwpion pantoV tou plhqouV kai exelexanto stefanon andra plhrh pistewV kai pneumatoV agiou kai filippon kai procoron kai nikanora kai timwna kai parmenan kai nikolaon proshluton antiocea

And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:

ouV esthsan enwpion twn apostolwn kai proseuxamenoi epeqhkan autoiV taV ceiraV

Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed they laid their hands on them.

kai o logoV tou qeou huxanen kai eplhquneto o ariqmoV twn maqhtwn en ierousalhm sfodra poluV te ocloV twn ierewn uphkouon th pistei

And the word of God increased and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

stefanoV de plhrhV pistewV kai dunamewV epoiei terata kai shmeia megala en tw law

And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

anesthsan de tineV twn ek thV sunagwghV thV legomenhV libertinwn kai kurhnaiwn kai alexandrewn kai twn apo kilikiaV kai asiaV suzhtounteV tw stefanw

Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

kai ouk iscuon antisthnai th sofia kai tw pneumati w elalei

And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake

tote upebalon andraV legontaV oti akhkoamen autou lalountoV rhmata blasfhma eiV mwshn kai ton qeon

Then they suborned men, which said We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.

sunekinhsan te ton laon kai touV presbuterouV kai touV grammateiV kai epistanteV sunhrpasan auton kai hgagon eiV to sunedrion

And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,

esthsan te marturaV yeudeiV legontaV o anqrwpoV outoV ou pauetai rhmata blasfhma lalwn kata tou topou tou agiou toutou kai tou nomou

And set up false witnesses, which said This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

akhkoamen gar autou legontoV oti ihsouV o nazwraioV outoV katalusei ton topon touton kai allaxei ta eqh a paredwken hmin mwushV

For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

kai atenisanteV eiV auton apanteV oi kaqezomenoi en tw sunedriw eidon to proswpon autou wsei proswpon aggelou

And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.
