The Book of Hosea

Chapter 8

1

[Set] the trumpet to thy mouth. [He shall come] as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed1 my covenant, and trespassed1 against my law.

2

Israel shall cry4 unto me, My God, we know1 thee.

3

Israel hath cast off1 [the thing that is] good: the enemy6 shall pursue4 him.

4

They have set up kings,52 but not by me: they have made princes,52 and I knew1 [it] not: of their silver and their gold have they made1 them idols, that they may be cut off.11

5

Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast [thee] off;1 mine anger is kindled1 against them: how long [will it be] ere they attain4 to innocency?

6

For from Israel [was] it also: the workman made1 it; therefore it [is] not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.

7

For they have sown4 the wind, and they shall reap4 the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield4 no meal: if so be it yield,4 the strangers5 shall swallow it up.4

8

Israel is swallowed up:8 now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein [is] no pleasure.

9

For they are gone up1 to Assyria, a wild ass alone6 by himself: Ephraim hath hired52 lovers.

10

Yea, though they have hired4 among the nations, now will I gather17 them, and they shall sorrow55 a little for the burden of the king of princes.

11

Because Ephraim hath made many52 altars to sin,2 altars shall be unto him to sin.2

12

I have written4 to him the great things 7239 of my law, [but] they were counted8 as a strange thing.5

13

They sacrifice4 flesh [for] the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat4 [it; but] the LORD accepteth1 them not; now will he remember4 their iniquity, and visit4 their sins: they shall return4 to Egypt.

14

For Israel hath forgotten4 his Maker,6 and buildeth4 temples; and Judah hath multiplied52 fenced7 cities: but I will send14 a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour1 the palaces thereof.
