The First Book of Moses, called Genesis

Chapter 22

1

And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt14 Abraham, and said4 unto him, Abraham: and he said,4 Behold, [here] I [am].

2

And he said,4 Take3 now thy son, thine only [son] Isaac, whom thou lovest,1 and get3 thee into the land of Moriah; and offer54 him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell4 thee of.

3

And Abraham rose up early55 in the morning, and saddled4 his ass, and took4 two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave17 the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up,4 and went4 unto the place of which God had told1 him.

4

Then on the third day Abraham lifted up4 his eyes, and saw4 the place afar off.

5

And Abraham said4 unto his young men, Abide3 ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go4 yonder and worship,101 and come again4 to you.

6

And Abraham took4 the wood of the burnt offering, and laid4 [it] upon Isaac his son; and he took4 the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went4 both of them together.

7

And Isaac spake4 unto Abraham his father, and said,4 My father: and he said,4 Here [am] I, my son. And he said,4 Behold the fire and the wood: but where [is] the lamb for a burnt offering?

8

And Abraham said,4 My son, God will provide4 himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went4 both of them together.

9

And they came4 to the place which God had told1 him of; and Abraham built4 an altar there, and laid the wood in order,4 and bound4 Isaac his son, and laid4 him on the altar upon the wood.

10

And Abraham stretched forth4 his hand, and took4 the knife to slay2 his son.

11

And the angel of the LORD called4 unto him out of heaven, and said,4 Abraham, Abraham: and he said,4 Here [am] I.

12

And he said,4 Lay4 not thine hand upon the lad, neither do4 thou any thing unto him: for now I know1 that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld1 thy son, thine only [son] from me.

13

And Abraham lifted up4 his eyes, and looked,4 and behold behind [him] a ram caught12 in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went4 and took4 the ram, and offered him up55 for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

14

And Abraham called4 the name of that place Jehovahjireh: 7200 4 3070 as it is said11 [to] this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.11

15

And the angel of the LORD called4 unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,

16

And said,4 By myself have I sworn,8 saith7 the LORD, for because 834 thou hast done1 this thing, and hast not withheld1 thy son, thine only [son]:

17

That in blessing15 I will bless17 thee, and in multiplying53 I will multiply55 thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which [is] upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess4 the gate of his enemies;6

18

And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;98 because 6118 thou hast obeyed1 my voice.

19

So Abraham returned4 unto his young men, and they rose up4 and went4 together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt4 at Beersheba.

20

And it came to pass after these things, that it was told93 Abraham, saying,2 Behold, Milcah, she hath also born1 children unto thy brother Nahor;

21

Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,

22

And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.

23

And Bethuel begat1 Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear1 to Nahor, Abraham's brother.

24

And his concubine, whose name [was] Reumah, she bare4 also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.
