The Book of Amos

Chapter 9

1

I saw1 the Lord standing12 upon the altar: and he said,4 Smite54 the lintel of the door, that the posts may shake:4 and cut3 them in the head, all of them; and I will slay4 the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth5 of them shall not flee away,4 and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.11

2

Though they dig4 into hell, thence shall mine hand take4 them; though they climb up4 to heaven, thence will I bring them down:55

3

And though they hide11 themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search17 and take1 them out thence; and though they be hid11 from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command17 the serpent, and he shall bite1 them:

4

And though they go4 into captivity before their enemies,6 thence will I command17 the sword, and it shall slay1 them: and I will set1 mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.

5

And the Lord GOD of hosts [is] he that toucheth6 the land, and it shall melt,4 and all that dwell6 therein shall mourn:1 and it shall rise up1 wholly like a flood; and shall be drowned,1 as [by] the flood of Egypt.

6

[It is] he that buildeth6 his stories in the heaven, and hath founded1 his troop in the earth; he that calleth6 for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out4 upon the face of the earth: The LORD [is] his name.

7

[Are] ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith7 the LORD. Have not I brought up52 Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

8

Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD [are] upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy52 it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly53 destroy55 the house of Jacob, saith7 the LORD.

9

For, lo, I will command,18 and I will sift52 the house of Israel among all nations, like as [corn] is sifted11 in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall4 upon the earth.

10

All the sinners of my people shall die4 by the sword, which say,6 The evil shall not overtake55 nor prevent55 us.

11

In that day will I raise up55 the tabernacle of David that is fallen,6 and close up1 the breaches thereof; and I will raise up55 his ruins, and I will build1 it as in the days of old:

12

That they may possess4 the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called8 by my name, saith7 the LORD that doeth6 this.

13

Behold, the days come,6 saith7 the LORD, that the plowman6 shall overtake8 the reaper,6 and the treader6 of grapes him that soweth6 seed; and the mountains shall drop52 sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.113

14

And I will bring again1 the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build1 the waste12 cities, and inhabit1 [them]; and they shall plant1 vineyards, and drink1 the wine thereof; they shall also make1 gardens, and eat1 the fruit of them.

15

And I will plant1 them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up11 out of their land which I have given1 them, saith1 the LORD thy God.
