The First Book of Moses, called Genesis

Chapter 27

1

And it came to pass,4 that when Isaac was old,1 and his eyes were dim,4 so that he could not see,2 he called4 Esau his eldest son, and said4 unto him, My son: and he said4 unto him, Behold, [here am] I.

2

And he said,4 Behold now, I am old,1 I know1 not the day of my death:

3

Now therefore take,3 I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out3 to the field, and take3 me [some] venison; 6720

4

And make3 me savoury meat, such as I love,1 and bring54 [it] to me, that I may eat;4 that my soul may bless17 thee before I die.4

5

And Rebekah heard6 when Isaac spake15 to Esau his son. And Esau went4 to the field to hunt2 [for] venison, [and] to bring53 [it].

6

And Rebekah spake1 unto Jacob her son, saying,2 Behold, I heard1 thy father speak18 unto Esau thy brother, saying,2

7

Bring54 me venison, and make3 me savoury meat, that I may eat,4 and bless17 thee before the LORD before my death.

8

Now therefore, my son, obey3 my voice according to that which I command18 thee.

9

Go3 now to the flock, and fetch3 me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make4 them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth:1

10

And thou shalt bring52 [it] to thy father, that he may eat,1 and that he may bless17 thee before his death.

11

And Jacob said4 to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother [is] a hairy man, and I [am] a smooth man:

12

My father peradventure will feel4 me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver;47 and I shall bring52 a curse upon me, and not a blessing.

13

And his mother said4 unto him, Upon me [be] thy curse, my son: only obey3 my voice, and go3 fetch3 me [them].

14

And he went,4 and fetched,4 and brought55 [them] to his mother: and his mother made4 savoury meat, such as his father loved.1

15

And Rebekah took4 goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which [were] with her in the house, and put55 them upon Jacob her younger son:

16

And she put52 the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:

17

And she gave4 the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared,1 into the hand of her son Jacob.

18

And he came4 unto his father, and said,4 My father: and he said,4 Here [am] I; who [art] thou, my son?

19

And Jacob said4 unto his father, I [am] Esau thy firstborn; I have done1 according as thou badest14 me: arise,3 I pray thee, sit3 and eat3 of my venison, that thy soul may bless17 me.

20

And Isaac said4 unto his son, How [is it] that thou hast found2 [it] so quickly,14 my son? And he said,4 Because the LORD thy God brought52 [it] to me.

21

And Isaac said4 unto Jacob, Come near,3 I pray thee, that I may feel4 thee, my son, whether thou [be] my very son Esau or not.

22

And Jacob went near4 unto Isaac his father; and he felt4 him, and said,4 The voice [is] Jacob's voice, but the hands [are] the hands of Esau.

23

And he discerned52 him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau's hands: so he blessed17 him.

24

And he said,4 [Art] thou my very son Esau? And he said,4 I [am].

25

And he said,4 Bring [it] near54 to me, and I will eat4 of my son's venison, that my soul may bless17 thee. And he brought [it] near55 to him, and he did eat:4 and he brought55 him wine, and he drank.4

26

And his father Isaac said4 unto him, Come near3 now, and kiss3 me, my son.

27

And he came near,4 and kissed4 him: and he smelled55 the smell of his raiment, and blessed17 him, and said,4 See,3 the smell of my son [is] as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:14

28

Therefore God give4 thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:

29

Let people serve4 thee, and nations bow down101 to thee: be3 lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down101 to thee: cursed7 [be] every one that curseth6 thee, and blessed7 [be] he that blesseth18 thee.

30

And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end14 of blessing15 Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce2 gone out1 from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in1 from his hunting.

31

And he also had made4 savoury meat, and brought55 it unto his father, and said4 unto his father, Let my father arise,4 and eat4 of his son's venison, that thy soul may bless17 me.

32

And Isaac his father said4 unto him, Who [art] thou? And he said,4 I [am] thy son, thy firstborn Esau.

33

And Isaac trembled4 very exceedingly, 2731 and said,4 Who? where [is] he that hath taken5 venison, and brought55 [it] me, and I have eaten4 of all before thou camest,4 and have blessed17 him? yea, [and] he shall be blessed.7

34

And when Esau heard2 the words of his father, he cried4 with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said4 unto his father, Bless16 me, [even] me also, O my father.

35

And he said,4 Thy brother came1 with subtilty, and hath taken away4 thy blessing.

36

And he said,4 Is not he rightly named1 8034 Jacob? for he hath supplanted me4 these two times: he took away1 my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away1 my blessing. And he said,4 Hast thou not reserved1 a blessing for me?

37

And Isaac answered4 and said4 unto Esau, Behold, I have made1 him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given1 to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained1 him: and what shall I do4 now unto thee, my son?

38

And Esau said4 unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless16 me, [even] me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up4 his voice, and wept.4

39

And Isaac his father answered4 and said4 unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;

40

And by thy sword shalt thou live,4 and shalt serve4 thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion,55 that thou shalt break1 his yoke from off thy neck.

41

And Esau hated4 Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed14 him: and Esau said4 in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand;4 then will I slay4 my brother Jacob.

42

And these words of Esau her elder son were told93 to Rebekah: and she sent4 and called4 Jacob her younger son, and said4 unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort102 himself, [purposing] to kill2 thee.

43

Now therefore, my son, obey3 my voice; and arise,3 flee3 thou to Laban my brother to Haran;

44

And tarry1 with him a few days, until thy brother's fury turn away;4

45

Until thy brother's anger turn away2 from thee, and he forget1 [that] which thou hast done1 to him: then I will send,1 and fetch1 thee from thence: why should I be deprived4 also of you both in one day?

46

And Rebekah said4 to Isaac, I am weary1 of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take6 a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these [which are] of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?
