The First Book of Moses, called Genesis

Chapter 21

1

And the LORD visited1 Sarah as he had said,1 and the LORD did4 unto Sarah as he had spoken.14

2

For Sarah conceived,4 and bare4 Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken14 to him.

3

And Abraham called4 the name of his son that was born12 unto him, whom Sarah bare1 to him, Isaac.

4

And Abraham circumcised4 his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded14 him.

5

And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born9 unto him.

6

And Sarah said,4 God hath made1 me to laugh, [so that] all that hear6 will laugh4 with me.

7

And she said,4 Who would have said14 unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck?52 for I have born1 [him] a son in his old age.

8

And the child grew,4 and was weaned:11 and Abraham made4 a great feast the [same] day that Isaac was weaned.9

9

And Sarah saw4 the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born1 unto Abraham, mocking.18

10

Wherefore she said4 unto Abraham, Cast out16 this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir4 with my son, [even] with Isaac.

11

And the thing was very grievous4 in Abraham's sight because of his son.

12

And God said4 unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous4 in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said4 unto thee, hearken3 unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.11

13

And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make4 a nation, because he [is] thy seed.

14

And Abraham rose up early55 in the morning, and took4 bread, and a bottle of water, and gave4 [it] unto Hagar, putting1 [it] on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away:17 and she departed,4 and wandered4 in the wilderness of Beersheba.

15

And the water was spent4 in the bottle, and she cast55 the child under one of the shrubs.

16

And she went,4 and sat her down4 over against [him] a good way off,53 as it were a bowshot:18 7198 for she said,1 Let me not see4 the death of the child. And she sat4 over against [him], and lift up4 her voice, and wept.4

17

And God heard4 the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called4 to Hagar out of heaven, and said4 unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear4 not; for God hath heard1 the voice of the lad where he [is].

18

Arise,3 lift up3 the lad, and hold54 him in thine hand; for I will make4 him a great nation.

19

And God opened4 her eyes, and she saw4 a well of water; and she went,4 and filled17 the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.55

20

And God was with the lad; and he grew,4 and dwelt4 in the wilderness, and became an archer.6 7199

21

And he dwelt4 in the wilderness of Paran: and his mother took4 him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

22

And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake4 unto Abraham, saying,2 God [is] with thee in all that thou doest:6

23

Now therefore swear10 unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely4 with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son: [but] according to the kindness that I have done1 unto thee, thou shalt do4 unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned.1

24

And Abraham said,4 I will swear.11

25

And Abraham reproved52 Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away.1

26

And Abimelech said,4 I wot1 not who hath done1 this thing: neither didst thou tell52 me, neither yet heard1 I [of it], but to day.

27

And Abraham took4 sheep and oxen, and gave4 them unto Abimelech; and both of them made4 a covenant.

28

And Abraham set55 seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.

29

And Abimelech said4 unto Abraham, What [mean] these seven ewe lambs which thou hast set52 by themselves?

30

And he said,4 For [these] seven ewe lambs shalt thou take4 of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have digged1 this well.

31

Wherefore he called1 that place Beersheba; because there they sware8 both of them.

32

Thus they made4 a covenant at Beersheba: then Abimelech rose up,4 and Phichol the chief captain of his host, and they returned4 into the land of the Philistines.

33

And [Abraham] planted4 a grove in Beersheba, and called4 there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God.

34

And Abraham sojourned4 in the Philistines' land many days.
